Sign the Bill of Reproductive Rights - The Petition Site
I empathize with all of our elected officials. This is a very sensitive topic and leads to many hot debates. Everyone has an opinion, whether it is from a scientific or religious viewpoint.
If you are able to step back and remember to separate the church from the state, the topic becomes clearer. Former President Reagan once said, "Government's first duty is to protect the people, not run their lives." Ultimately, reproductive choices are the responsibility of the individual and not something that should be selected by the government.
Those of us who believe in reproductive rights are not asking you to force others to follow our beliefs, decisions or choices. We are simply stating that we believe in a person's sovereign right to make and follow their own beliefs, decisions and choices.
By attempting to limit an individual's reproductive rights, you are electing to deny the rights of a sovereign person in lieu of the rights of a legal non-entity. No matter what scientists, researchers, religious groups and people argue about or agree upon, we must remember that personhood in the United States starts at the moment of birth - not conception.
No one wants to see the return of back alley clinics. Neither do we want people to be forced to cross borders to have medical procedures. Restrictions would see to the reemergence of both.
This quote sums up my beliefs: "I am free because I say I am. My freedom is not dependent on any government benefit or piece of legislation. My rights are inherent in the fact that I was born a sovereign being. They are non negotiable. Government can list and protect them, but my rights are not theirs to give away."
